It’s safe to say Yellowjackets was one of the most-watched and discussed shows of the year. One shoulder formal dress On the red carpet at the Critics Choice Awards last night, the series’s stars Jasmin Savoy Brown, Ella Pernell, Melanie Lynskey, and Juliette Lewis all commanded attention in their colorful gowns (or, in Lynskey’s case, a sleek suit). It was a stylish gathering of leading Hollywood women, which Brown says is what first drew her to the project. “Yellowjackets is special because it is an all-female ensemble,” she tells Vogue. “It doesn’t shy away from any aspect of being female. The brutality and ugliness is seen alongside the delicacy, and intimate female relationships [are depicted] in an honest way.”
For the glitzy awards ceremony last night (for which Yellowjackets was nominated for best drama series), Brown tells Vogue that she wanted to pull off a total fashion-180 on the red carpet. “I wanted to show a different side of myself,” says Brown. “Normally I’m drawn towards more edgy looks, but last night I wanted to express my soft feminine side with a nod to Old Hollywood. I call this ‘Old-Hollywood-meets-Khaleesi chic.’” To pull it off, she and her stylist Amanda Lim chose Prada’s strapless, powder-pink column gown, accessorized by Stuart Weitzman heels, Beladora jewelry, and a Tyler Ellis clutch. Black long dresses with sleeves Hair stylist Daniel K Palmer and makeup artist Pauly Blanch applied a retro-glam look, including finger waves on Brown’s platinum hair and a dark, bold lip.
In general, Brown says she sees red carpets as an opportunity to play a character for the night, just like with her acting. “I don’t take life too seriously,” says Brown. “I enjoy collaboration, so I encourage each member of my team to bring their opinions, style, and flair, and marry it with mine.” For a look to feel very her, Brown says the ensemble always needs that special something. “Sometimes that’s a pop of color on my lip or a bold shoe,” says Brown. “Other times, it’s three shots of tequila.”
Now that the Critics Choice Awards are over and done with, fans of Brown will be excited to know that she has a few new projects to look forward to. “I’m currently recording my debut EP East LA, and wrapping out season one of my podcast for Netflix, The Homo Schedule,” says Brown.
